There is an interesting legend about the color of the water. It has sadness woven into it.
The legend of the Blausee
According to a legend, the color of the lake turned into this hue of the blue when a blue-eyed maiden died of a broken heart.
The story says that this lake was like any other lakes in the Alps.
It used to be a place where a young couple, very much in love with each other, spent alone time in the middle of the lake.
The young maiden, who lived close to the lake, and a shepherd she loved so dearly, used to row out onto the lake to enjoy moonlit nights together. It seems like a scene from one of Disney movies.
But the story soon turned into something less beautiful, and it didn’t have a happy ending.
One day, unfortunately, the shepherd fell off a cliff and lost his life.
Inconsolable maiden spent night after night in the middle of the lake to mourn. One morning her parents found her dead.
She drowned and sank to the bottom of the lake together with the boat.
Afterward, the color of the lake mysteriously changed. It turned into the intensely blue, the exact color of the eyes of the maiden.
